Two brilliant Brazillian guitar masters, Luiz Morais and Ariel Gragnani, with the rhythms of Samba, Choro and Bossa Nova pulsating through their veins, combine to bring our four concert Two-Guitars Festival to an International flavoured conclusion.
Luiz Morais, no stranger to JBGB Events concerts, appearing with his septet in our World Music series at St James and sold out concerts at Crazy Coqs and Pizza Express Jazz Club, is not only a virtuoso on the 7-string guitar, (an extra bass string) but also a creative writer and arranger.
Born in the North-East of Brazil, Luiz was immersed in vibrant Brazilian musical culture. He built his musical foundations playing Samba, Choro and Bossa Nova rhythms and the iconic North Eastern rhythm of Forró.
He launched his first album ‘Nascente’ to critical acclaim in the UK, Brazil and Spain. ‘Nascente’ is a predominately instrumental work uniting a wide range of flavours and influences, combining the most powerful rhythmic roots of Brazilian popular music with the freshness and harmonic sophistication of jazz. These elements are markedly present in the arrangements, all written by Luiz himself, resulting in an exuberant, fine and original sound.
Brazilian guitarist Ariel Gragnani is a passionate musician, performer and educator.
Ariel grew up in the city of Sao Paulo and first took an interest for guitar at the age of 8, learning the music of Villa-Lobos, Garoto, Joao Pernambuco, Ernesto Nazareh and other composers of classical and characteristic Brazilian music. He joined the Conservatoire in Sao Paulo, where he studied latin jazz, harmony and improvisation.
Ariel later moved to London to study at the Royal College of Music During the six years at the Royal College and had the privilege of participating in masterclasses with leading figures in international music.
Having received his Undergraduate and Masters of Performance from the RCM, Ariel graduated with distinction, claiming first prize in the 2013 RCM Guitar Competition.
Ariel enjoys a unique career, performing solo on the classical guitar as well as in ensembles, playing traditional Brazilian music, latin, jazz and blues. Ariel is also a very dedicated music educator.
