Two brilliant, in demand creative British music makers, James Davison on trumpet and Callum Au on Trombone, and no strangers to PizzaExpress Jazz Club, Dean Street, bring their top drawer quintet to Dean Street to play the dynamic music of Americans Clark Terry and Bob Brookmeyer, and a whole lot more
It all started in 1961 when the owner of the Half Note club in New York approached trombonist Bob Brookmeyer about the possibility that he could form a group to play at the club. Bob contacted trumpeter Clark Terry who at once said “yes”, and so started the Clark Terry - Bob Brookmeyer Quintet, the spirited group that was the talk of the town from when they began playing regularly in New York in 1961 until 1965.
Their exuberance and joy in playing was palpable, with Terry, mostly on flugelhorn, tearing through solo after solo with his characteristic dancing figures and rich, glowing tone. Brookmeyer, not quite the self-starting soloist that Terry is, usually had to lay a foundation on which to build his solos, but that done, he was as ruggedly convincing as Terry.
They proved to be a popular combo, working together for 4 years and producing 3 studio albums.
James and Callum bring to this concert the same spirited performance of the original combined with their own originality.
Our audience will hear a mixture of classics from the Clark Terry - Bob Brookmeyer Quintet library as well as some originals in the same style that Callum and James have written together plus a few standards into the mix as well.
Here’s Clark and Bob in full swing mood from their album “Tonight”.
And this is James and Callum
