Karen Sharp is a well established and brilliant jazz instrumentalist on the U.K. jazz scene, playing tenor and baritone saxophones.
Winning Best saxophone on many occasions in the British Jazz Awards, she features regularly with her own quartet and as a band musician with the Guy Barker Orchestra at the Proms, with the Ronnie Scotts and most recently the Nikki Iles Jazz Orchestra
Karen, who rose to prominence with the Humphrey Lyttelton and Johnny Dankworth bands, appears at Dean Street with her long-established line-up of the great jazz writer, arranger and outstanding accompanist Nikki Iles – piano; the legendary, long standing double bass giant Dave Green and the multi award winning drummer Steve Brown -all world class musicians who also happen to be great friends. They have been together as a band for 12 years and it shows!
Together they create a unique sound that is warm, spontaneous and exciting, incorporating free flowing improvisation with almost telepathic ensemble playing. The quartet have recorded two albums to date, 'Spirit' and 'The Sun, the Moon and You' both of which include familiar, lesser-known and original tunes showcasing the unique spirit of a band with a shared passion for strong melodies, group interplay and respect for the jazz tradition.
Here’s Karen, with her quartet, playing the great standard “See you CB”.
“Sharp loves melody, whether composed or improvised, as reflected in her relaxed and natural phrasing”— Downbeat
