Gareth Lockrane Big Band - “Box Of Tricks” New Album Launch Concert
At Pizza Express Jazz Club, Dean Street, Soho, London
The new album from the great Gareth Lockrane Big band has been a while in the creation, planning and recording, but all that waiting has been worthwhile. This October Sunday Lunchtime concert at Dean Street, marks the arrival of a wealth of wonderful new writing and arranging as we launch the Gareth Lockrane Big Band new Album “Box of Tricks”
Their first album, “Fistfight At The Barndance”, was rated a top five jazz album of the year in the British Jazz Awards, and short listed as Best jazz album in the Parliamentary Jazz Awards.
Starting from a single post pandemic Sunday lunchtime concert with the Gareth Lockrane Big Band in 2021, PizzaExpress and JBGB Events have built a three time per year residency for the Gareth Lockrane Big Band across the last three years with awesome fresh writing, an album launch and outstanding audience enthusiasm and support
Mention Big Band Jazz and memories flood with the sound of our own Tubby Hayes Big Band and the great American sounds of Basie, Ellington, Dorsey, Evans, Jones & Marsalis. Add to that list the name Lockrane. It is one of the world’s most outstanding bands & comes from this side of the pond.
The audience to the last concert were enthusiastic. “Just wonderful” “Totally original” “…compelling sounds” “What an amazing British band of talent”
“Probably the best Jazz Big Band since Thad Jones & Mel Lewis” – The Hoste of Jazz
Gareth’s Band features a combination of established British jazz greats with Academy trained younger musicians, in multi layered arrangements scored for 4 trumpets, 4 trombones, 5 reeds, guitar, piano, bass, percussion and drums in addition to Gareth on the entire flute family.
Here’s’ the band in brilliant form in an earlier Pizza Express Jazz Club performance.
This “Box Of Tricks” album launch is a “must get to” concert for all music lovers for whom the sound of the big band ticks all the boxes.
