Pizza Express Jazz Club, Dean Street, Soho, London
With 60+ years of performing experience, Norma Winstone, continues as one of our most wonderful jazz singers and arrives at Dean Street to open our new Thursday Lunchtime’s “Weekend Starts Here series.
Admired for her versatility, improvising vocalise and writing original material, (who could ever forget Ladies in Mercedes) Norma performs her collection of songs which were performed and sometimes written by artists who have inspired her over the years. These include Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, and Randy Newman, to name but a few.
Norma has collected a whole series of awards, including BBC Jazz Awards Best Vocalist, a Lifetime Achievement in Jazz award from the Worshipful Company of Musicians, the Parliamentary Jazz Awards for Best Singer, and Lifetime Achievement, plus Jazz FM’s Best Singer accolade.
She is also a Fellow of Trinity Laban and Honary Member of the Royal Academy of Music.
Here is a taste of what’s in store with Norma singing “Celeste” by Ralph Towner. Wonderfully romantic.
Norma enjoys a lengthy list of recordings and concert appearance with great accompanists, including Kit Downes and Gwilym Simcock plus her long-standing musical partners,
Nikki Iles- piano;
Mark Lockheart- saxophones and
Steve Watts – double bass,
accompanying Norma at this “Inspitations” concert.
““One of the Glories of contemporary Jazz”
– Jazz Journal
“Right now, she is at the peak of her form… there is no jazz singer in the country to touch her.”
– Alyn Shipton, The Times, London
